Courtenay's 5 Fan Fiction Links

Hunger Games - 'Heart on Fire'

A work in progress, this fan fiction picks up after the first novel in Suzanne Collins trilogy following a slightly different plot and possibly canon. (for those that have not read the series there is a brief plot summary you can check out here.) In this version, Katniss and Peeta compete in the 73rd Hunger Games with this story taking place in the 74th games, just before the Quarter Quell. Still angry at Katniss' defiance from the 73rd games, President Snow takes his revenge by ensuring Gale is entered into the 74th games making Katniss and Peeta mentors for their District. As a result of Snow's actions, Katniss is forced to question to whom her loyalties lie with - keeping Gale alive in the games or maintaining her relationship with Peeta.

As mentioned earlier, this story is still far from being completed however it does take on an interesting canon however I did find issues with the pace of the story and it does become rather tedious reading about two guys butting heads over a girl who is yet to make up her mind over whom she loves. There author also has written a gradual build up to the 74th Hunger Games which I suspect (and hope) should start in the newly updated chapters. Overall this story is easy to follow and could successfully be used as a means of procrastination of the mind numbing variety.

How I Met Your Mother - 'Growing Up'

Barney learns to give up on Robin for good for Ted's happiness. But it's not Robin that's breaking Barney's heart.

This story does have an A/N (authors note) that it contains spoiler alerts; specifically season 7, episode 17; so if are yet to watch this episode, it would probably pay not to read this story. Aside from the small warning, this fanfic piece is a brief O/S (one shot) told from Barney's POV.

Overall, a well written piece, particularly from Barney's POV as the writer gives readers a chance to see a more vulnerable side of Barney as opposed to his usual awesome-ness.

Nightmare Before Christmas - 'Snake and Spider Stew'

A short light-hearted piece, the author of this poem/song aims to describe their take on Oogie Boogies 'Snake and Spider Stew'.

Unlike all the other inhabitants of Halloween Town who scare people simply because they enjoy it, Oogie appears to be truly evil. With the appearance of an overstuffed pin cushion full of bugs, I found this poem/song did not do justice to character of Oogie. Although straightforward and easy to read, the ingredients within this dish could have been more gruesome considering who he is.

Awkward - 'Daylight Bends'

Awkward is an american teen drama based around social outcast Jenna Hamilton. Struggling with her identity, Jenna recieves a letter outlining the misfortunes of her life. Shortly after, Jenna has an accident which becomes misconstrued as a suicide attempt and is now well-known by her peers because of it. This fan-fiction follows the love triangle of Matty, Jenna and Jake and like the TV show Jenna takes a chance with Jake much to the disdain of Matty.

I found this work in progress to be a great adaption to the original canon. Fans of the show are able to easily follow this storyline and those are yet to watch an episode will still be able to experience why the show has become popular. The characters have also been captured in a way that stays true to the show; particularly Valerie - the slightly misguided school counselor. The only downside to this story would probably be the predictability of the love triangle between Matty, Jenna and Jake but other than that a highly enjoyable read.

Big Bang Theory - 'Happy Valentines Day'

Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom based on 5 characters - 4 scientists (Howard, Leonard, Sheldon and Raj) and 1 beautiful stereo-typical blonde (Penny). The geekiness and intellect of the four guys is contrasted for comic effect with Penny's social skills and common sense.

Only a few chapters long, the title in this fanfic is not the least romantic as the title suggests. Featuring only Penny and Sheldon, the author tells of how these two characters clash yet still maintain a civil and at times trying friendship. With Leonard away on a trip, Penny is forced to stay with Sheldon after spreading her flu to Sheldon. I found this fan-fiction to be slightly tedious and felt as if there wasn't much to go on in regards to the plot. Although the bickering between Penny and Sheldon were mildly entertaining, the hints of a possible romance between the two fell short in their portrayal. Overall this story could be better if there was a beta helping the author.
