Awkward
This fanfic piece is based on the MTV programme Awkward. The programme is based on the life of an outcast teen and how her life was turned upside down after an anonymous letter about all her flaws. This specific fanfic takes the love triangle relationship she has with her current boyfriend and her ex-boyfriend and throws it a curve ball where Jenna finds out she is pregnant and how she is unaware of who the father is. In Jenna's mind she knows who the father is, her ex. Her ex-boyfriend knows he is the father but has to learn how to deal with the fact that his best friend (Jenna's current boyfriend) will be raising his son.
I chose this piece of fanfic because i was obsessed with the series. The title quickly grabbed my attention as it would be full of humorous drama, this was not the case once i started reading. I thought that the story had a bit of a soap opera feel more than a teen drama. I don't think this piece of fanfic worked because it had too much of a sad dramatic feel to it, and i didn't get the right connection between the characters in the story to the actual characters from the show.
Dear John
Dear John is a movie based on the novel Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. A love story between a soldier and his summer romance. The fanfic carries on from the end of the movie where John and Savannah reunite after John visits Savannahs' dieing husband Tim. Savannah is thrilled to see John, as he didn't get to say goodbye the last time he left. As time passed Savannah realised that she still loves and misses John. John says his final goodbye. John suggests that him and Savannah have no more contact with each other as their relationship has sailed and she is now married to Tim who should be her main priority. Savannah is devastated by his decision and continues to reminisce about their past when she looks at the moon.
I enjoyed this piece as it got right to the point and was easy to read. I especially liked it because in the movie and book the author leaves you hanging with what happens after wards and this fanfic ends the story for you. The author did not stray off from the main story line too much so it is believable and can easily be imagined as actually happening in the original story.
Noughts and Crosses
The fanfic that i read had a different ending where Callum was not hung and had been in hiding with his brother for months. Callum and his brother return home to visit their mother, where they walk in on Sephy in the kitchen and Callum sees that Sephy has a young child. Callum was unaware of Sephy being pregnant and Callums brother had been hiding this information from him. This piece of fanfic was very short and used more speech rather than detailed text from a first person point of view, as the book itself does. I didn't think this piece worked because it rushed the story and had more script writing than first person narrator as in the novel itself.
The Notebook
A love story about a summer romance. Before the Summer ends Allie is moved away to the city by her parents and her mother hides the letters sent to her by Noah and the romance between them eventually dies. Allie becomes engaged, and decides to go back to visit Noah. While there they rekindle their love and Allie is left with the decision of who to stay with. Allie decides to stay with Noah because he was her first love.
In this fanfic the writer changes the ending. The scene where Allie is crying while driving away from Noah, she closes her eyes for a second longer and gets into an accident with an oncoming truck. Noah hears the crash and runs towards it to check if it were anything to do with Allie. Allie is lying on the ground, before she closes her eyes she apologises to Noah for the last time. I liked this piece as it gives an alternative ending and comes off very interesting and would blend in well with the original storyline, although it is a sad ending it was creative.
2 broke Girls is a television programme about a rich white girl named Caroline, who looses her millions when her father is done for fraud. She finds herself in the poorer side of the city with just the clothes on her back. She finds a small diner and is given a job as a waitress. This is where she finds her new roommate Max who also works at the diner. Max helps her get used to the life of having little money and hard work.
The fanfic is a small piece where Carolines' ex boyfriend William turns up at the diner with his new girlfriend. Max tries to keep Caroline from seeing him, but it back fires when Max's harsh words go a bit too far and Caroline walks off into the view of William. William calls out to Caroline and introduces her to his new girlfriend who has some things to say about the ex-heiress who's father is in jail. This fanfic did not work well because 2 Broke Girls is a comedy and i did not find anything in this piece of fanfic humorous. The characters in the story did not relate to the characters of the series. Max has many funny come backs and is very opinionative, this fanfic failed to have any ressemblance to the series character. The story line was interesting, all that was missing was the behavioural link between the fanfic characters and the series characters.
